Rashes in Adults: When to Seek Immediate Care

All rashes may look the same and seem easily treatable with OTC medicines to the untrained eye. But this is not always the case, according to dermatologists.

Rashes may appear as welts, blotches, or blisters on the skin and they may be itchy, scaly, dry, or colored red. They may also occur in one area of skin or all over the person’s body. While most rashes are not life-threatening, some can be an indicator of something more serious.

If you have a rash and notice any of the following symptoms, see a dermatologist right away or visit our emergency care in Frederick, Maryland immediately:

  • The rash is all over your body. This may signal an infection or allergic reaction.
  • You have a fever with the rash.
  • The rash is sudden and rapidly spreads to other parts of your body.
  • If your rash begins to blister, especially when the blistering rash affects the skin around your eyes, multiple areas in your mouth, or your genitals.
  • The rash is painful or if it starts to get infected. Signs of an infected rash include swelling, having a yellow or green fluid, crusting, pain, and warmth in the area of the rash.

In general, rashes may come in many forms and may take days or weeks to heal. Instead of treating the rash on your own, it’s recommended that you consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. You may also visit a walk-in clinic near you.
